M6 JETSTREAM

The Large Area Micro X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer

Performance in Spatially Resolved Analysis of Large Objects

The Bruker M6 JETSTREAM is designed for the non-destructive elemental analysis of large samples. The mobility of the instrument allows it to be placed at the site of the object of interest, be it in a gallery, museum or on the shop floor. The performance parameters enable scanning areas of 800 mm x 600 mm with a variable spot size down to 100 µm and speeds of up to 100 mm/s. As the system is capable of measurement "on-the-fly" this results in a pixel dwell time of as short as 1 ms.

Proven software for best analytical results

The M6 JETSTREAM uses Bruker's powerful analytical software package for spatially resolved X-ray spectrometry, featuring:

  • Optical mosaic acquisition using the instrument's video cameras
  • Selection of working distance
  • Flexible measurement setup under consideration of
    • object (single spot, line scan or area)
    • step size
    • dwell time
  • Acquisition of measurement data in hyperspectral database files, consisting of video images and spectra stored at every measurement point
  • Large toolkit for processing hyperspectral databases (HyperMaps),
    • extraction of arbitrary object sum spectra (ellipses, rectangles, polygons)
    • extraction of line scans
    • determination of elements present only at single measurement locations (MaximumPixelSpectrum)
    • chemical phase analysis (Autophase)
  • Standardless Fundamental Parameter (FP) quantification.

Element distribution analysis for large samples with highest performance:

  • The M6 JETSTREAM measurement rig can be tilted, allowing samples to be scanned either horizontally or vertically
  • The spot size of the M6 JETSTREAM can be adapted in five steps to match the structure of the sample and the desired spatial resolution
  • Bruker's advanced XFlash® silicon drift detectors (SDD) are used for the detection of fluorescence radiation. They feature high count rate capability and best energy resolution over a wide count rate range
  • Special safety circuitry provides optimal user protection against exposure to X-rays
  • Ultrasound distance measurement safeguards against collision with the measurement object
  • Regardless of sample size, the M6 JETSTREAM can be easily positioned due to its mobility
  • It can be disassembled into four parts which makes it transportable.

The M6 JETSTREAM is Bruker's large area spectrometer for the non-destructive in-situ analysis of large objects. Featuring state of the art technology it allows to scan large samples in a short time. A powerful analytical software package provides the user with a range of tools for getting the most out of every measurement.

Inclinable rig for vertical and horizontal measurement

The M6 JETSTREAM can be used in two principal measurement positions. In vertical measurement mode e.g. for wall-hanging objects - like paintings - the spectrometer rig can be tilted by ±10° for fine adjustment to the geometry of the object. Alternatively, the whole rig can be tilted by 90°, allowing to measure large objects horizontally in top-down geometry. For this purpose two legs fold down to support the rig. In this case the sample is optimally placed on a Z stage for easy height adjustment.

Flexible high intensity excitation

The use of polycapillary optics for the concentration of the X-ray beam on a small spot on the sample with a diameter of only 100 µm warrants highest excitation intensity. A low-power microfocus X-ray tube as radiation source is sufficient for this purpose.

The higher magnifying video microscope used for sample viewing has an adjustable focal plane , which permits the use of different working distances and according variation of the beam diameter between 100 µm and approximately 500 µm without significant loss in intensity.

Ultimate speed XFlash® detector technology

As high excitation efficiency has to be complemented by a fast radiation detection system, the M6 JETSTREAM is equipped with a 30 mm2 active area XFlash® silicon drift detector (SDD). This small and light-weight detector easily fits into the spectrometer head. Thermoelectric Peltier cooling supports low maintenance operation without consumables. Yet input count rates of several hundred kcps can be handled with low signal loss through dead time (actual count rate depends on sample nature and tube settings).

Shortest possible data acquisition

The step size needs to be small to attain high spatial resolution. The exceptional speed of the M6 JETSTREAM – based on high excitation intensity and detection efficiency in combination with the fast stage – allows to keep measurement times short, even under this circumstance. A dwell time of 0.1 ms can be selected in combination with the minimum step size of 10 μm. This results in a maximum stage speed of 100 mm/s! Translated into real world conditions, this means that, depending on sample size and required spatial resolution, high quality measurements can be performed within several minutes to a few hours.
